San Francisco, California
Nitro is a fun-loving company based in San Francisco’s Financial District. Nitro is the creator of intuitive solutions that enable people to work smarter with digital documents and (finally) obtain the elusive paperless office. Nitro’s workplace had to reflect the intuitive and fun qualities of their product as well as solve for the functional requirements of their quickly expanding work force. With a diverse team that includes engineering, marketing, sales,
business development, and G+A, the space needed to be carefully divided and apportioned to meet the acoustic and spatial requirements of each user group, while still feeling open and connected. By playing off the historic building’s unique geometry and providing carefully considered glazing, the design team was able to successfully achieve this goal.
The work cafe provides a venue for the team to meet informally over a bite and drink, or listen to the resident DJ spin
tunes from the DJ booth.
Founded in Australia in 2005, the company has a strong sense of hospitality and ensures that every member of the team knows how to work hard and play hard. In their own words, the space needed to demonstrate “larrikinism,” which refers to the Australian folk tradition of irreverence. To this end, instead of a traditional reception desk, Blitz built a fully-functional bar with taps and under-counter refrigerators. The geometric canopy at the reception is clad in reclaimed wine barrel staves (Merlot, of course) and guests are invited to join the Nitro team for happy hour every day.
The tactile, layered, materials-based design aesthetic carries through to the work-cafe and beyond, ensuring a holistic experience. Though very serious about their product and the work they are doing, the Nitro team doesn’t take themselves too seriously and wanted the space to reflect their cheeky sense of humor. Fun graphics, flying wombats, graffiti, and the absence of the trapping of traditional corporate design ensure that the space is always ready to support the Nitro team as they work hard and play harder.
Shredded paper suspended in resin is a poignant reminder of the way nitro’s technology is rendering paper obsolete
