One Workplace Featured in ULI Case Study

In a new video case study by the Urban Land Institute, Blitz Principal/CoFounder Seth Hanley discusses the challenges and inspirations that drove the design for the One Workplace Headquarters. Flexibility, adaptability, innovative design, and ownership were four of the features that One Workplace was looking for when it started to think about relocating to a new space in Silicon Valley.

The industrial building, which previously functioned as a paper manufacturing facility, was transformed into a collaborative open office and furniture showroom. Learn more about how the project broke the mold for industrial building repurposing at the ULI case study website.

The Microsoft Project Wins a Make It Work Award!

We are thrilled to announce that our newly completed Microsoft project has won a 2015 Interior Design Magazine Make It Work award! Located at 555 California in the heart of downtown San Francisco, the 43,500 square foot office space acts as a showroom for innovation and discovery. Angular meeting pavilions feature the company’s four iconic brand colors. Carved recesses in the pavilions reveal the brand through the use of back-painted glass.

Inspired by the early “flying windows” screen saver, the 3form ceiling sails glow in brand colors and create a distinct street-visible presence.

We’d like to thank our clients at Microsoft and the Project Management team at JLL for collaborating with us to make this project a success.

For more on the project, check out the Microsoft project page.

We’re proud to announce our project for Zendesk’s San Francisco HQ has won the IIDA Northern California Work Medium Merit Award! Not one, but two of Blitz’s most recent projects have been featured in the design issue of The Q, The Registry’s print magazine. In an article on Comcast’s Silicon Valley Innovation Center, Blitz CEO Melissa Wallin is quoted:

Recruiting and retaining talent in the Bay Area market is highly competitive, said Melissa Wallin, principal and CEO of Blitz, a San Francisco-based architecture and interior design firm that worked on the Innovation Center. “So it’s best to have a definite tool to get talent,” she said. Workplace design is a creative way to attract those top prospects.

Designer Zach Meade is also quoted in a story on Optimizely’s San Francisco headquarters:

In the tech industry, collaboration is important, hence the need for an open floor plan and few doors, Meade said. “If you look back 20 years, the majority of space was private offices. Now, the majority of rooms are not enclosed,” he said. “[Tech companies] want an open environment that allows for small collaboration zones.”

Dwell Competition Top Submission

The brief for this competition was simple: design the garage of the future. What future? we said. The garage is a relic of the 20th century, seldom used for storing cars and more often used to store our hoardings / pingpong table / beer-making apparatus. The residential garage has taken on another use completely as a multi-purpose space free from the constraints and formality of the typical Western home in that it can be used for any purpose, and be maintained in a state of order or flux.

On the other hand, the residential carriage house in-fact has no future. In locations such as California, the cost of construction of a garage is equivalent to the cost of the car it might contain. And as cars become smaller, more fuel efficient, and use more renewable energy sources – as they are constructed from recycled materials and become themselves completely recyclable – it is questionable if the automobile can even survive as a status symbol worth the additional construction. With new cars-when-you-need-them operations springing up all the over the place, and cities embracing the same concept for bicycles, we propose a different approach altogether. And Danny, we’re sorry we forgot the vespas! View the project at the dwell website.
